The Foster Schmidt Dance Academy (FSDA) for Down Syndrome is the community outreach of SIDEWAYS Contemporary Dance Company, a non-profit dance troupe, based in Roswell, Georgia. FSDA is dedicated to giving children with Down syndrome an opportunity to develop self-confidence through dance. SIDEWAYS dancers teach weekly classes to help these dance students work on muscle tone, balance and coordination. SIDEWAYS also incorporates performances by FSDA dancers at its summer and holiday productions. This collaboration allows dancers with Down syndrome to showcase their abilities and inspire all who work with them.
The Campaign
Our primary fundraising campaign is to raise money to increase awareness of FSDA and to give current dancers an opportunity of a lifetime to attend the 2015 annual meeting of the National Down Syndrome Congress which will be held next summer in July. It is our goal to secure a speaker spot at the meeting to highlight FSDA and to give a dance demonstration of the SIDEWAYS/FSDA partnership. In order to attend this meeting we need to cover the travel expenses for FSDA and SIDEWAYS dancers.
If we reach our primary fundraising goal, additional donations will be put towards sending FSDA dancers on a dream trip to participate in a dance workshop in Disney World and perform on the Downtown Disney World stage. This experience will allow these dancers to feel part of the traditional dance community.
If the expenses are met to cover these two opportunities for our dancers any additional monies received will be used to expand and publish the dance and lifestyle curriculum currently provided. FSDA’s programming has attracted interest from across the country and we want to expand its reach.
