Founded as a not-for-profit organization in 2006 by Charlotte Foster Williamson, SIDEWAYS is devoted to
investigating the “voice of the unheard” by presenting stories through dance. Character intention drives the
choreographic process, utilizing emotion to illustrate meaning. SIDEWAYS dancers are integral in making the
narrative come to life by transforming from dancer to storyteller.
Through performances across the southeast, SIDEWAYS repertory has received impressive feedback from
dance choreographers: Ann Reinking (Fosse – the musical), Steve Rooks (Alvin Ailey American Dance
Theatre), Wendy Perron (Dance Magazine), and Mia Michaels (So You Think You Can Dance). Foster is
credited with creating a human atmosphere on stage and demanding honest performances from her dancers.
SIDEWAYS is dedicated to expanding perspectives through community outreach programming. Everyone Is An
Artist is a lecture/demonstration that teaches students how to express themselves through dance. Most recently,
SIDEWAYS formed a partnership with the Foster-Schmidt Dance Company for Down Syndrome. SIDEWAYS
company members dance alongside the FSDC dancers and provide additional performance opportunities. The
partnership leads to unlimited rewards for both participant and company member.
